Dr. Mattar completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center,
and he received additional special training in advanced laparoscopy as a
clinical fellow and clinical instructor on the Endo-Surgery unit at Emory
University Hospital. He received his medical degree from Cairo University.
His areas of interest include the comprehensive treatment of the diseases associated with morbid obesity and laparoscopic weight loss surgery; laparoscopic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and other diseases of the foregut; endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of foregut diseases, including the placement of wireless pH measuring capsules and radiofrequency treatment of reflux; and laparoscopic treatment of ventral hernias.
Dr. Mattar was formerly assistant professor of surgery in the Mark Ravitch/Leon C. Hirsh Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Dr. Mattar is board certified in surgery and is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and the American Society of Bariatric Surgeons.
