Preparing for Baby

As you anticipate the birth of your child, there are many preparations to be made. The following resources should give you a jumpstart on your baby preparations. For more information, be sure to consult with your physician.

Having a baby can be one of the most exciting times in your life. Our Pregnancy Web Center, presented by Clarian Women's Services, is full of important information designed to guide you through your pregnancy - you'll see how your baby develops each week, find helpful planning tips, and learn what to expect from labor and delivery. While most pregnancies result in healthy babies, certain women have a greater chance of having a baby with a birth defect. Learn about Clarian's maternal-fetal medicine program and genetic counseling services.

Childbirth Education Classes

Clarian Health offers the Great Expectations Childbirth Education Program for expectant mothers and their families. Offered at various times and locations, these classes included courses for the first-time mom, new fathers, siblings and include topics such as breastfeeding, lamaze, mom and baby yoga and much more. Birth Preference List

The birth of your baby is a very important time in your life. At Clarian, our goal is to provide you with the family-centered care you deserve. Completing a birth preference list can help us know what is important to you and your family during this special time. Fill out the list and take it with you to discuss with your doctor or midwife, and bring it with you when you come to deliver your baby.

Complete your birth preference list.

Hospital Packing List

For mother:

  • Address book and prepaid phone card to call family and friends
  • Bathrobe/night gown
  • Breast pads
  • Camera and film/tape (video cameras must be approved by your physician)
  • Copies of birth preference list
  • Focal point items, such as photographs
  • Going home clothing and undergarments (usually the size worn during the fifth month)
  • Lip balm
  • Lotions/oils for massage
  • Nursing bras
  • Relaxation aids: CDs, tapes, games, books, magazines
  • Slippers
  • Snacks
  • Socks
  • Stopwatch or watch with second hand for timing contractions
  • Tennis balls or rolling pin for back labor massage
  • Toiletry items

For baby:

  • Infant car seat (infant will not be discharged without a regulation car seat)
  • Going home outfit
  • Receiving blanket
  • Extra blankets for positioning baby in car seat
  • Socks or booties
  • Snowsuit in winter
