Primary care represents the first level of the health care system. It encompasses preventive care, health maintenance, identification and management of common conditions, and coordination of consultations and referrals. Primary care is provided in outpatient or ambulatory care settings, but the scope of the primary care "provider" may extend into hospital settings.
Having a regular primary care doctor is an important advantage when it comes to maintaining your good health. The doctor you choose will get to know you and what your health is normally like. If a change in your health comes up, the doctor will be more likely to recognize it and act on it than someone who doesn't know you or your medical history very well.
More than 70 primary care physicians can be found through Methodist Medical Group, a partner of Clarian Health. Methodist Medical Group is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1994 as a physician group that strives to continuously improve the value of health care services provided to patients at 30 locations within central Indiana. For more information on Methodist Medical Group, visit mmgdoctor.org.
If you need to see other medical specialists or health care providers, your primary care doctor can keep in touch with them and make sure the treatments recommended by different providers are not incompatible with each other.
